The Kingston Artists Soapbox Derby is pleased to announce Min Goto, the winner of the 2025 Poster Design Contest.

It has become a tradition for the organizers of the Kingston Artists Soapbox Derby to choose an artist from the community to create the poster for that year’s derby. Poster designs have run the gamut from classically artistic to whimsical and fun. For this year’s event, the Artists Soapbox Derby Committee held a poster design contest where every age and experience level can compete on a level playing field. Seventeen artists participated this year and an award of $500 was offered to the winner.

A panel of judges comprising local artists, graphic designers, and businesses selected Min Goto as the winning design for this year’s Soapbox Derby poster.  Min is a graduate from Pratt Institute with a degree in communications design, currently works as a creative services designer at Knopf Doubleday, while pursuing cartooning and illustration in their free time. They moved to Kingston in 2024 with their spouse, Hadar, and their dogs, Snacktime and Pudding Cup.  You can find other examples of Min’s work and contact them at their website min-goto.com

In announcing the winner Bob Johnson, the chair of the selection committee expressed the view of the panel. “Judging of the artwork was again very difficult because of the great variety of styles and visual approaches the artists took in keeping with the theme of “creative family fun”. The poster chosen seemed to capture this emotion the best. We thank all who submitted for this special thirtieth anniversary year edition!”

Asked about her vision for the poster, Min said: “I wanted the poster to reflect the exuberance and childlike whimsy of the derby. What came to mind was wacky wiggly cars racing down Broadway, overlayed with really energetic hand drawn typeface. As someone new to the area I am so honored to be welcomed as a part of this tradition and a part of this community.”

All of the artists submissions including the winning poster will be on display at the Arts Society of Kingston, located at the start line of the derby, for the month of August. The artists included in the exhibit are Sienna Cruz, Rick Holland, Felix Olivieri, David Klein, Camille (Cami) Fischer, Ava Kaloz, Will Lytle, Sabina Povill, Iko and Mila Malikin, Tafari Saunders, Isaac Iacchus Lopez, Kerry McQuaide, Ilana Ostrovsky, Marshall Rounds, Marshall Rounds, Annie Dwyer, and Katrina Simpson.
